چکیده

Existence of gas-hydrates in the marine sediments elevates the velocity of seismic waves, whereas even a small amount of underlying free-gas decreases the seismic velocity considerably. These changes in velocities can be used for the assessment of gas-hydrates. The traveltime inversion is an effective method to derive a 2-D velocity structure from the seismic data. We have applied the method to the Multi Channel Seismic (MCS) data for inferring gas hydrates and underlying free-gas in the Kerala-Konkan offshore region. A six layer 2-D velocity model has been generated from the reflection traveltimes using a ray tracing technique. The topmost sediment layer is ~165 m thick with velocity ranging from 1,680 m/s and 1,740 m/s. The second layer is ~110 m thick with velocity ranging between 1,890–1,950 m/s. The third layer with velocity of 2,100-2,180 m/s and thickness of ~125 m is interpreted as the gas hydrate-bearing sediment, below which the velocity drops to 1,620– 1,720 m/s. The velocity drop in the fourth layer (~180 m) may be due to the presence of free-gas. The bottommost sedimentary layer is marked with a velocity of 2600-2700 m/s.

3D joint inversion of seismic traveltime and gravity data: a case study

Joint inversion of different geophysical datasets is an effective way to eliminate non-uniqueness in geophysical inversion problems. In this paper, we focus on a case study of joint inversion of seismic traveltime and gravity observations. The results are encouraging and we can have confidence that, comparing traveltime tomography alone, joint inversion of seismic traveltime and gravity data im...

High resolution traveltime and slowness tomography

A new 2-D traveltime tomography algorithm has been developed for use with long offset seismic streamer data. The forward problem is solved using initial value ray tracing in Delaunay triangulated grids. The traveltimes are calculated analytically. The linearised joint interface and velocity inversion is regularised via a geostatistical smoothing regularisation based on the formulation of a data...

Three-dimensional joint inversion of traveltime and gravity data across the Chicxulub impact crater

[1] In 2005 an extensive new seismic refraction data set was acquired over the central part of the Chicxulub impact crater, allowing us to image its structure with much better resolution than before. However, models derived from traveltime data are limited by the available ray coverage and the nonuniqueness that is inherent to all geophysical methods. Therefore, many different models can fit th...

2-D Surface Wave Tomography in the Northwest Part of the Iranian Plateau

In this study, we obtained two-dimensional tomography maps of the Rayleigh wave group velocity for the northwest part of the Iranian Plateau in order to investigate the structure of the crust and the uppermost mantle of NW Iran. To do this, the local earthquake data during the period 2006-2013, recorded by the 10 broadband stations of the Iranian seismic network (INSN) were used. After the prel...

Stochastic Seismic Inversion using both Waveform and Traveltime Data and Its Application to Time-lapse Monitoring

A stochastic approach to seismic inversion using the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) is proposed. Seismic depth and time image data are used as the input for EnKF stochastic seismic inversion. The sonic log is used to estimate source wavelet and create initial models for the inversion, which provides an efficient integration of sonic log data and seismic data. We use both travel time and waveform...
